Show Dog

Bones, muscles, physical characteristics, gait and attitude are all assessed with the show dog.  The biomechanics of the dog should show a natural fluid movement but what happens when this movement becomes dysfunctional.  All dogs within their lifetime will obtain some sort of muscular injury (just the same as us humans), and it may not be from any one specific accident, it can be as a result of just having fun, playing with other dogs or even slipping on the floor.  It may be as a result of repetitive strain injury from something seemingly harmless like continually jumping on/off the sofa.  Muscular issues are often the cause of irregularities of the posture or gait patterns.  An example of some of the issues below could indicate a muscular problem:

·      Leg shifting when standing

·      Lameness

·      Pacing

·      Throwing a leg

·      Stiffness

·      Inability to stand comfortably

·      Nervous/tense in ring

·      Unsettled when being examined by the judge

·      Swayback

·      Roaching

As the lead therapist at the Canine Bodywork Clinic (CBC), I have the working knowledge of the dogs muscular and skeletal systems, and this combined with advanced soft tissue palpation skills, allows me to be able to identify areas of the dog’s musculature that may be restricting the normal movement patterns. The main aims of the CBC is to:

·      Improve gait and static posture

·      Provide hands on check of the muscular system

·      Release trigger points

·      Address any anxiety issues

·      Provide fluid movement

·      Break down adhesions

·      Release restrictions in fascia

·      Improve range of movement
