Any dog can obtain muscle injuries, pet dogs included. This can be due to an accident, surgery or repetitive strain through Activities of Daily Living.
Accidents and surgery are self-explanatory but what about Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s)? Some forms of ADL’s are caused by seemingly harmless activities that you wouldn’t even think about on a daily basis, but these repetitive activities can cause micro trauma to the muscle, here are a few examples:
· Jumping in/out of the car
· Ball chasing – especially with a ball launcher!
· Pulling on the lead
· Feeding height
· Persistent standing on back legs
· Bedding – sleeping in a curved plastic bed
· Up/down the stairs
· Jumping on/off the sofa
· Excessive tugging games
· Flooring – Laminate/Wooden/Tiled
Were there a few on the list that your dog does on a daily basis?
When activities are performed repetitively, ‘Repetitive Strain Injury’ can occur. A repetitive strain injury caused by continual micro-trauma to muscles can cause a cycle of pain to begin, as muscle fibres work overtime to make up for the dysfunction.
Dogs like to hide pain, and they do it very well but some subtle indicators to look out for are:
· Twitches in the skin
· Seeming old before their time
· Slowing down or struggling on walks
· Nibbling or biting an area of the body
· Becoming grumpy with other dogs
· Not wanting to play with other dogs
· Difficulty doing things that they used to do – like jumping on the sofa
· Changes in their posture or gait
· Spending a lot more time sleeping
· Not enjoying being groomed or petted
· Limping or lameness
These are all common signs of discomfort and pain, and they can be alleviated by addressing issues like myofascial pain, trigger points and strains, also habitual tension resulting from undetected injuries or as a result of protective muscle splinting due to an orthopaedic condition.
The Canine Bodywork Clinic (CBC) can offer therapy, which is perfect for your dog if:
· Your dog is displaying any of the above signs
· Have intermittent lameness/limping which doesn’t seem to resolve
· You have received inconclusive x-rays

· Wanting to be groomed/petted
· Are able to return to what they used to do
